One of the most enjoyable aspects of temporarily living over here in the States (giant food and frequent compliments about my accent aside) is the reality show 'Kell On Earth' which centers around Kelly Cutrone and her fashion PR company People's Revolution. Much as I adore Kelly "If you have to cry, go outside"Cutrone, the real breakout star of the show, has to be her new assistant Andrew Mukamal. With his personal goth-boy, punk, androgynous style, Andrew can be seen wearing all manner of ensembles from dresses, skinny jeans, skirts, mesh tops and slinky one-shouldered body-con get-ups. All served up with a healthy dose of studded and spiked jewelry, oh, and of course some leather.

I managed to avoid getting sucked into the mesmerizing, voyeuristic, black hole that is Twitter until about 6 months ago. Since then, I have enjoyed many a half-hour here and there wasting time spying on the lives of the fash-pack and other celebs as they indulge in their mundane daily activities. However, things have been looking up during NY Fashion week, with some entertaining tweets coming from all sectors of the fashion community. Just in case any of you are not on Twitter (and not at all because I have no interesting image-based entries to post on the blog ;-) ), here are a few of my favorite tweets from the past week;

Browsing the New York Times 'T Magazine' blog, I was checking out the photos from Brian Bedder's Fashion week photo blog and saw an image of a sultry looking pair of red patent heels. This gave me the idea to go and fetch these much neglected pair of Miu Miu pumps from my wardrobe, and give them an outing this evening.

In the spirit of Valentines Day tomorrow, please forgive the Cheesy display below with a Loiuse Borgeois embroidered pillowcase I acquired from her exhibition at Tate Modern back in 2007.

Footwear-wise I went back to basics with these Reiss heels today. Very comfortable and easy to walk in due to the chunky heel and hidden platform. Also slightly more interesting than your plain black pumps due to the lizard-effect pattern on them. I'm trying to get in as much heel-wearing as possible, as I have injured my foot and fear that my doctor will be enforcing a strict flats only policy soon. Never mind, I'll console myself by spending the rest of the day checking out Ebay and creating an unobtainable wish list on Net-a-Porter.

Ok, so now I feel REALLY bad for lagging behind in my blog posts.

I finally got around to checking in with my blog yesterday (whilst distracting myself from the stupidbowl, I mean Superbowl - sorry sports fans, but hey while I'm on the subject, way to go Saints!) and found that I was the lucky recipient of not one, but TWO blog awards.

This morning involved a very early start and a trip to the US immigration office to sort my visa out, followed by a long wait, which gave me chance to catch up on a big batch of British Vogue magazines that my mum dispatched to me from back home. All I can say is thank f. that I had such interesting reading material else the wait would have been pretty unbearable.

Long wait over, I was ushered over to a counter where I had to stand and chat to an immigration officer. Now, when i booked the appointment online, I was given a ton of information on what to bring/not bring etc, but I wish they had also included notes on suitable footwear, as my mega heel platform wedges did some serious damage to my ankles as i stood for 40 minutes at the counter waiting for the lady to file my documents. Never before have I longed more for a pair of ballet flats.

Anyway, to my point, and more so to my outfit. My waiting room reading, amongst which featured several breton-esque ensembles, caused me to dig out this somewhat nautical outfit when I got home and had finished massaging my long suffering feet. The Breton top I have had forever, well about 15 years actually (good job it was really loose when I got it), and the jacket was a French Connection find from the Summer.

Wow, Summer - that seems like ages ago. Come back Sun, where are you??!

Treasure hunting in my wardrobe.

Due to a lack of transportation, I've been holed up in the house today. Boooooo-ring! With nothing apart from a marathon of Project Runway to keep me mildly amused, I found myself rummaging through my wardrobe and re-discovering old favorites. Top of my finds was this Phillip Lim black V-neck jumper, with an unusual back in the form of a line of buttons, which when opened reveals a nude coloured sequin panel. (gotta love those sequins).

My trawl unearthed further sequined delights in the form of this Moschino cardigan, which I believe was initially part of a twinset, yet I appear to have lost the matching top somewhere on my many moves across the Atlantic. I tried it on, and was delighted to see that it still fits. It has a very 'ladylike' style however, so I think I'll have to un-pretty it a bit and perhaps 'rough it up' a bit with a leather jacket. Either that or reach for the pearls and Alice headband.

Sleeping Male Models

I rarely get excited about the Menswear collections (sorry boys) but looking at the recent updates on Style and Twitter coming from the Milan shows, I've been managing to keep up with the highlights.

Being a total sucker for anything remotely different than the usual run-of-the-mill catwalk presentations, I have been eagerly awaiting for a video to be posted of the Moncler Gamme Bleu F/W 2010 show of January 18th. Not, I hasten to add, so that I could gawk at the man candy trotting down the runway, but because of the unusual format of the show. This unique presentation comprised of models sleeping in barrack-style beds in matching uniforms and nightcaps, who were then roused from their (not needed) beauty sleep by the call of a bugle, and who then proceeded to remove a bag from under their beds, the contents of which they then dressed themselves with.

Here's some more stills of the show taken from Style, and I've also embedded the video below ( big shout out to my laptop for co-operating today) which is well worth viewing as some of the looks are really rather good, even if the outfits don't involve stilettos.

Sorry for my lack of posts lately, I've been having issues with my computer, and only have my I-pod touch to satisfy my internet browsing needs. The blogger application on it is OK, but I can't upload my own photos via the I-pod, so I'm back to square one. Arrgh! The curses of technology.
If my laptop was behaving better, perhaps I might treat it to one of these stunning Gareth Pugh laptop bags, (which he created in collaboration with Paris boutique Collette last year), but for now I am reduced to giving it evil stares as a try and type with my big sausage fingers on my I-pod's tiny keyboard.

Random musings on perspex shoes and bags

The Fendi S/S 2010 show reveled some gorgeous clothes obviously, but I have to admit that as I poured over the images on Style, it really was these two perspex clutches that stole the show for me. In particular, having a penchant for all things studded and/or spiky, the clutch below was the piece de resistance for me. I mean, look at it, it even has a bare stud-less patch so you can hold it properly without your hand being impaled on the studs - how thoughtful!

The clear perspex look also cropped up again in the Fendi show with the shoes. I love the wrap around ankle tie, but sadly, every time I see this kind of perspex platform on shoes, i can't help but think of those worn by strippers (not that i have anything against strippers of course, I mean who doesn't want to know how to work a pole??!!).

S/S 2010 also saw Prada attempting to utilize clear plastic in their shoes, and whilst I'm loving the chandelier effect of all those chunky crystals I'm a bit distracted by that whopping great big exposed velcro strap. It reminds me of 'jelly shoes' I used to have to wear on the beach as a child. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?!

Shoes I did love from the S/S shows ( apart from the Mc Queen ones I previously posted about ) were these Jil Sander ones with their very delicate looking heel. Roll on the Fall 2010 shows so that I can see what footwear delights are in store for next winter!

Capes

Ever since I saw this red cape featured in the 'Red Riding Hood' ghd ad campaign I've been looking all over for a similar cape. I've previously purchased sweater-type capes, but have been looking for something more substantial to keep out the winter chills.

And so to ebay I went, and was lucky that my search revealed this gem from Tin Roof Vintage. After a not-so-furious bidding war, I am now the proud owner of this little beauty, and actually looking forward to venturing out in the cold. Now all I need is some leather over-the knee boots, but i think I'll pass on the axe.

Vintage gold clutch with hidden treasures

So, today has been pretty uneventful. I mostly spent the day trying to organize my clothing and accessories, but it seemed to take me forever as I kept on finding items which I had forgotten about, and then rediscovering the joys of them all over again ( I love it when that happens, it feels almost as good as buying new things).

While I was doing a quick bag inventory, I remembered about this vintage evening clutch that I have been meaning to post about since I received it as a Christmas gift. It has a hard, box-like structure, is slightly bigger than my hand and is surprisingly heavy for its size. When i opened it on Christmas Day I remember thinking, 'wow this is really beautiful, but why is it so heavy?' The answer was to be revealed on opening it......

TA DAAAAAA.....! On opening one side of the bag, I revealed an inbuilt mirror, a coin holder, a lipstick holder, and what I assume is a section for holding old school cigarettes (or as I use it for.. credit cards). There are also three clips, which pivot on a hinge to hold a comb.

The other side revealed a lighter, and a space ideal for (more) credit cards or money, or if you have one, a really tiny, thin mobile phone.

Apparently, the bag was from the 1920's and so I love to think of all the glamorous outings it would have had. Hopefully it will be able to add a few more glamorous moments to its life at its new home chez moi.

Sheer lace print top

Whilst its obviously fun to go shopping and pick out outfits for yourself, it can often be even more exciting to receive unexpected fashion gifts. not only are these items free (yipee!) but they may have been things that we did not notice in the shops ourselves, or something we would not have necessarily chosen / could afford / bothered to try on.

And so then, a big thank you to my beloved for the top which he gave me. I've been drawn to all the sheer items that are around at the moment (yes, even in this cold weather) and so was delighted to receive this sort of floral/lace print top from Urban Outfitters. Desperate to wear it today, I had to team it with some pretty heavy duty additions to keep out the cold. These consisted of a very thick and long (I had to roll it over 4 times) ribbed, knitted snood/scarf from Reiss that i received as a Christmas gift two years ago, and a thick leather biker jacket, also coincidentally from Reiss fall '08 collection.

Much as I love the Winter, especially the Fall/Winter collections, footwear is a bit of an issue in the chilly weather. I was initially wearing these McQueen platform peep toes (bought in a sale last year at a ridiculously reduced price), until I ventured outside for about half a minute, ran back inside and had to put on some 'sensible' shoes.

P.S Being my first 'outfit' post, I never realized how difficult it is to actually capture pictures of oneself. After much propping up the camera on piles of magazines and shoe boxes, and then running back in place before the timer went off, these were the best I could do!

Well, actually worn out this evening, as I spent most of the day chilling at home. Zara shoe-booties purchased over the Summer. They are very comfortable despite the very high heel, but a bit chilly on the toes at this time of year.

Remnants of Christmas

I love Christmas (as if i haven't already said that before) and I always get a bit sulky post New-Year's when the tree has to come down and all the decorations get put away. All the stores lovely Christmas windows also seem to disappear straight after Christmas, and are replaced by ugly, boring red 'SALES- 50% OFF!!!!!' signs filling up the store fronts.

With this in mind, I was delighted when shopping in Denver on the first few days of January to see the beautiful Christmas windows of jeweler Tiffany & Co. still there, and still clinging on for dear life to the last few days of the festive season. The windows were a multi-layered paper-crafted delight, and you had to get up close to see all the detail. All the diamonds and other expensive finery were draped over the paper models and scenery, although a special mention has to go out to the sleigh-driving elf, who is really working the whole ring-as-a hat look.

There's a Big Blue Bear in Denver

As I'm still in the USA (and won't be returning to my beloved London until the Summer), I decided to spend New Year's eve in Denver. It was pretty low key on the night itself due to the dreaded post-Christmas cold I was suffering with, but I got to spend the first two days of the year having a good look around the city, and found several great places which I hope to go back and see.

My best find however, which, incidentally was totally by chance, was Lawrence Argent's "I See What You Mean" public art installation. As you can see by the photos, its a giant blue bear, peering into the glass front of the Colorado Convention Center. What the photos don't show (very well) however, is the fact that the bear is made up of hundreds, well probably more like thousands, of triangles. It looks even more beautiful and unexpected in person, and a must see if you are in the area, especially if you like giant blue things.

Trompe L'oeil

Having never previously been a fan of Reiss before, I was surprised when last Summer I was in their Islington store, killing time before a haircut, and found a bunch of stuff that I was drawn to. Half an hour later (was nearly late to the hair salon- oops!) and several trips in and out of the dressing room, I came away with quite a few items (and a much smaller bank balance), one of which was this top. It looks great with a pair of skinny jeans, and leather jacket, and I would post an outfit photo but I ate too much while I was feeling ill and sorry for myself, and the skinny jeans are just waaaaaaaaay too skinny.

Anyway, back on point.. This top, with its faux chain necklace (see detail above), got me into the whole trompe l'oeil thing, and I've since collected a couple of other tops with trompe l'oeil necklace decoration prints, and am always looking for more. Imagine my delight then, when Susie on Style Bubble posted about the (then) upcoming trompe l'oeil range for Oasis by designer Rosalind Keep. It has now been available online for several weeks, and my post-crimbo finances have just about recovered enough to allow me to splash out on the dress (in black) and trench coat T shirt below. Now all I have to do is contain my excitement until they arrive, and then wait for the weather to warm up so they can get an outing. Happy New Year to me!

Gareth Pugh Mercedes Benz ad campaign

To celebrate the launch of their new sports car the SLS AMG, Mercedes Benz commissioned fashion Photographer Nick Knight and (my fashion obsession) Gareth Pugh to create an image for the ad campaign. I love the futuristic body armor styling of the outfit which is a trademark look of Mr Pugh, and think I'm way more excited about the clothing than the car (even if it does have really cool wing doors!).

So. 2010. Here it is, another decade, another fresh start and most importantly lots of new looks to look forward to.

Apologies for the long break in my blog entries, but like a lot of people I was struck down by the post-Christmas colds that were going around, and was not organized enough to sort out any pre-planned scheduled posts. I'm feeling a bit better now, so will be back on regular blogging form (fingers crossed).

I hope that everyone out there had a good Christmas, and had a fun time ringing in the New Year. Let's hope that its a good one for all of us.

P.S Photo is a close up of a See by Chloe T Shirt I own from the early noughties, which is now officially a very long time ago. I was wearing it in a sort of celebrating-New-Year's-with-cocktails style whilst convalescing.

.....especially if you are talking about these gorgeous leather gloves from Cordwainers graduate Gemma Johnson. Whilst browsing the web, I chanced upon her site and I fell in love with the pleated fabric around the cuff of the glove, going down into a 'V' shape point on the top of the hand. Check out her website also for leather molded bags in a variety of angular/geometric shapes by the way - the perfect accessory to accompany these gloves.

It must be the chilly weather, but i've found myself purchasing several pairs of gloves already this season (see below), so I think i'll have to put any more glove purchases on hold for now. Unless I happen to find any bargains in the sales of course!

As I'm typing this, I'm looking outside at the big, fluffy snowflakes falling from the sky and I was wondering how long it will last until, it warms up slightly and we find ourselves in a downpour of rain again. I'm terrible with umbrellas, in terms of actually retaining them, and not leaving them in various shops around town, or worse still, getting them blown inside out, so I found myself looking online for something a bit more unusual than the tiny fold-up black umbrellas that I have relied upon for many years.

I stumbled upon an online Umbrella shop by Japanese textile design Yoshida Iida, who makes beautiful handmade umbrellas for props, styling and also his own exhibitions. All umbrellas are made in his own atelier, from handmade printed textiles. Unfortunately, it seems they are rather difficult to actually obtain, although, he does sell individual umbrellas at his bi-annual exhibitions.

Being so beautiful, I'm not sure I'd actually want to get it wet, but it would be a great parasol.

On my Feet Today #7

Kitten heel pink/nude satin shoes from Topshop, which I purchased literally about 10 years ago. They are perfect for party-weary feet as they have a mid height heel, and the satin at the front wraps gently around the toes. I'm giving my feet a break for the next day or two, to ready them for any Christmas/New Year dizzying heels that may be heading their way.

Packing up for the Christmas holidays

Well, actually, I'm not packing up for the holidays, I'm staying put right here at home. However, if I were to be jetting off anywhere for the festivities, and had to choose my suitcases of choice, then to Prada, I would be heading. Having had the chance to see lots of the Prada luggage collection whilst in the NYC soho store, I totally fell in love, and the ivory and black collection (above) will be added to my wish list should I win the lottery.

A close second, would be any of the carry-on sized leather suitcases below, available in a multitude of colors. Although, if money was no object I'd go for one in every color just to ensure my travelling ensemble was always coordinated. Wow how greedy am I?!

Christmas presents past

I was really lucky as a child, as my Grandmother Eileen was always really into fashion. We used to enjoy several shopping trips in London together, and I used to love it when she went on big shopping sprees for her annual cruises on the QEII. She would also drop by and deliver me a fresh batch of fashion magazines each week, which I would sit and pour over for hours. Sadly, she died about five years ago, and I miss her greatly. Still, I take comfort in the many pieces of clothing and jewelry that she has passed on to me over the years, and one of my favorite pieces, is the gold locket that she used to wear everyday. The photos inside are of my brother and I as children, and its always good for a laugh to look at them.

My other favorite vintage hand me down present was from my Godmother, Sue, (AKA 'Auntie' Sue) who was my Grandmother's best friend. On my 21st, she gave me some of her vintage evening bags, my favorite of which is this beaded and sequined small white clutch. I've been using it often since I was given it, and in fact took it out to my birthday dinner this year.

Its really well made, and the beading is very detailed, so here's a close up:

The bag also sparkles a lot in the right light, so its perfect for the Christmas party season.

The label recently hit the news earlier this month, when it was announced that the somewhat reclusive designer Martin Margiela is leaving the fashion house, and will not be replaced. The label will continue (yay!) with the same creative team, so we can expect yet more quirky-cool clothes , and hopefully more interiors.

(sorry for the interiors heavy posts over the last couple of days, by the way - I just found out I'm moving in the new year, so seem to be creating my 'fantasy' shopping list for the new pad. Now all I need is a big bank balance to bring it all together)

Anyway, back to my point. The MMM label has always been famous for having unusual elements to its catwalk shows, be it sending models with their faces covered down the runway, or their 'hoof' like shoes.- remember them? Here's hoping that this will continue despite mr Margiela's absence.

Beautiful chairs that look like beautiful dresses

I've always had a thing for statement chairs that are beautifully crafted and designed, and the limited edition Alexander Mc Queen egg chair above is no exception. It also struck me however, that a lot of the pieces that i am drawn to in the furniture world, also remind me of runway looks from over the years.

Take the chair above for example, and the look from Gareth Pugh below, and they kinda sorta resemble each other.

Billboard bracelet vs. Patricia Field bracelet

Fashion inspiration can come from the most unusual of sources. Take this Billboard for example, which I took a photo of during my recent NY trip whilst taking a taxi ride from JFK to the hotel. The advertisement which is for Grand Marnier, features a lady (with gorgeous shoes) reclining in a chair and offering her cocktail glass up to be refilled. What drew my eye however was the chunky gold chain bracelet engulfing her small ladylike wrist. Consequently, over the next few days (and still continuing now..) I found myself searching Manhattan and the internet for a similar bracelet.

Sadly, during my stay in NY I didn't get to find a bracelet like this one, but did however find a totally different (but equally pleasing) one in the Patricia Field store.

The search continues.......

Scissor Scarf, Winona Dress, and Alien Monkeys with lobster hands

With the Chilly Winter weather in full effect, I find myself building upon my (ever-expanding)collection of scarves. Looking at the Snoozer Loser website I was instantly drawn to the Scissor print scarf. The scarf comes in a variety of colours, but I found myself drawn to the grey/black and grey/yellow versions.

Other lovely pieces on the site included the 'Winona dress' - a linen dress with brass pyramid studs, and the Veruca Pepper twill hooded coat. (see photos below). I loved the styling on the website, and the prices are pretty wallet-friendly. All items are made in the USA, and the label also has some great arts projects.

Best bit of their website has to be, without fail, their 'Saudade Saudade' promotional video for their 2009 fall/winter line. Directed by Johnny Woods, the captivating short film is described as ; " The tale of a girl who escapes the urban jungle only to find herself amongst magical friends in an alternative universe", and is every bit as weird, wonderful, and magical as it sounds.

The abridged version (for those of you that can't spare a whole 12 minutes to watch the full version) consists of a girl and two alien monkey creatures with lobster claw hands. Throughout the film, they engage in various activities, including; playing in the park, attempting to BBQ a rubber baby alligator, playing basketball, having a tea party with a strange looking man with a ponytail beard, and paper crafting. They then conclude the film by walking off hand in hand, into the sunset. Its certainly worth a look, and i've pasted the video clip below. Not your usual Christmas jumper

Hurry to Whistles now to grab one of their Christmas sweaters, and help out the charity Shelter at the same time. For every one of these fabulous sweaters that is sold, 25% of the purchase price will be donated to the charity, so there is even more reason to get involved in these festive fashion statements.

The dog on the above sweater is actually the pet of one of the Whistles' staff members apparently, and I have to say, that out of the set, this has to be my favorite. The other sweaters include one by stylist Fran Burns which features a Reindeer illustration (see below, top picture) and a snowflake print sweater which is the work of Christopher Simmonds, art director of creative agency Partner & Partner (see below, bottom picture).

Get them while you can, as they have been online for a while, and are selling out fast. Must be the fact that Christmas is around the corner - yippee!

Wild Thing Necklace

Whilst rummaging around a junk shop a few weeks ago, I found this rather tacky, yet quite cool leopard pendant. At only $5 (which is only about 3 GBP) I instantly decided to get it.

Whilst we're on the subject of leopard jewelry I'd like to point out how much I'm loving the Panthere de Cartier ring, below. It is often seen adorning the glamorous, super stylish fingers of Rachel Zoe, and sadly due to its $14,000 or so price tag, I don't think it will be coming anywhere near my hands anytime soon.

As if the ring itself wasn't already bling-tastic enough, it also comes comes covered in diamonds, for that extra-luxe touch.

Slightly more budget-friendly however, yet equally worthy of admiration, is this different leopard ring from Kenneth Jay Lane, available from net-a-porter. There are also cheaper versions available at ASOS, and other high street stores, so I think i'll be heading there to get my big cat jewelry obsession in check.

Marc Jacobs pumps which i purchased way back in 2002 (I think). I hadn't worn them for ages and when I saw them lurking around the bottom of my shoe rack, I thought they were due an outing.

Another favourite shop which I discovered during my recent time spent in New York is M&J Trimmings which has every kind of ribbon, tassle, bead, applique, stud, buckle, lace, sequin....(the list goes on), that you can imagine. Sadly, whilst I was there I was so overwhelmed with the sheer vastness of the collections there (and I had to hurry back to the hotel to go and get ready for a swanky dinner) that I only made a couple of purchases, one of which was the black applique above. I shall be attaching it to the neckline of a boring plain tunic dress that I own, but for the interim, I found a gold chain lying around, sewed it on, and bingo! I now have a big, bold necklace.

Bergdorf Goodman Christmas Windows NYC

One of my shopping highlights on my recent trip to New York, was the Christmas Windows created by the stores. Top of the list however, had to be Bergdorf Goodman, whose highly detailed and intricate displays made you want to stand there and study every aspect of the designs. The Alexander McQueen inspired window above was by far my favourite, not just for the boots (see below close up in the rather rubbish photo taken by me) but also for the miniature doll beside the main mannequin wearing a tiny coordinating outfit.

Gaga in Gareth Pugh

In one of my previous posts (see 'Fashion Adventures') I selected some Gareth Pugh outfits that I'd love to wear just for the sheer hell of it. Anyway, Lady Gaga has gone and beat me to it after sporting this look for her performance on the X Factor over the weekend. And, she's already got to wear the McQueen 'Armadillo' shoes too. It's so not fair!

Sequin Blazer from Topshop

So, I love sequins, but basically, I'm a bit scared of their ability to be slightly in-your-face sometimes. This is why this Topshop sequin blazer is perfect for me. It has cream square matte sequins (see detail below) and drapes itself very casually. Its not styled very inventively above, just with jeans and a t shirt, but I was having a lazy day and was so excited when it arrived, I just wanted to throw it on over what I was wearing at the time whilst slouching around the house.

Comme des Garcons Barbie, and Barbie as Rachel Zoe

Barbie has just had another makeover. This time, courtesy of Comme des Garcon's Rei Kawakubo. The limited edition doll was launched in Tokyo last week, and is wearing a photo-floral print dress, which is part of the Comme Des Garcons 'Jingle Flowers' range. Priced at 225 GBP (available from Comme des Garcons shops, and in London at Dover St Market) its not really something for children, but more for festive floral decoration/admiration.

Earlier this month barbie also took the form of super-celebrity LA stylist Rachel Zoe (complete with mini-birkin), for a one-off production to raise funds for Project Angel food. For those interested in bidding, and taking home the even tinier RZ check out charity buzz for further details.

Chanel Pre-Fall Collection. Shanghai.

Earlier this month, the fashion fabulous flew to Shanghai to see Chanel's Pre-Fall Collection, in all its uber-Chinoiserie glory. Not me however, but I have been drooling after the collection on Style.com. The oriental, meets futuristic collection contained piece after piece of elegant day and evening looks ranging from long military inspired overcoats, to luxe evening gowns. Whilst the Collection was predominantly on the black spectrum, flashes of red, yellow and blue were seen throughout, accessorized with big bold necklaces, tassles, thigh boots and orient inspired hair sticks and hats. There were so many looks that I just loved, I found it very hard to limit them down to these, so hence why there are so many. I strongly recommend going to view the whole collection on Style.com, it will be well worth it.

Vintage grey metal clutch

Another vintage find from Revolver in Albuquerque (see earlier post), is this metal, gray, sort of chain-mail clutch from the early 80s. I was attracted to the colour as whilst you often see them in black (in fact my mother used to have one years and years ago) you don't (or at least I haven't) see them in many other colours. The metal chain strap is detachable, so it can be worn on the shoulder or (as is my preferred method), carried as a clutch.

Prada Soho NY, and a Christmas gift to myself.

Ok, so everyone knows how cool the NY Soho Prada on Broadway is. Despite being there since 2001, however, this was in fact my first visit to the store, and it was visually even better in person, than in the pictures I had previously seen in architecture and design magazines. Please excuse my pictures therefore for not doing it justice, I was trying to be discreet and not to look too touristy.

The central feature of the store is a zebra wood wave that undulates through the store from the street level to the basement level. There are also, motorized hanging display cases that can be moved across tracks in the ceiling, and a flip-out stage for in-store events and parties. I also loved the giant trunks used as display cases downstairs in the women's shoe department, and the amazing luggage selection which was displayed as you entered the store. Designed by Rem Koolhaas/OMA the store also features an annually-changing block-length wall completely covered in a specially designed wallpaper.

Whilst in the store, apart from all the beautiful clothes, I found myself lusting after the large hat boxes, wishing that the money fairies would deliver me enough $ (or any other currency) so I could get my paws on one. My purchases however were restricted to a pair of shoes (not for me, but for my significant other), and as I had been meaning to get a copy of the Prada book, I thought now was a good time, to treat myself, what with it being Christmas (nearly) and all.

The book, whilst rather expensive, is well worth the money. It covers everything from the history of the brand, collaborations with artists, the future of the label, and pictures of collections and ad campaigns from previous seasons up to 2009. Here are a few of my favorite shots of inside the book, which again, do not do justice to the real thing.

Happy Christmas to me!

Gareth Pugh SHOWstudio dress and feathered helmet

Looking through the SHOWstudio shop, to see the completed dress made by Gareth Pugh live at SHOWstudio (see earlier blog post), I was looking through other items in the shop, and saw this amazing feathered helmet, which he created for s/s 2010. Yours for the bargain price of 4,000 GBP.

Anyway, onto the dress itself........

Personally handcrafted by Pugh himself, you can see all the work that has gone into it. I'd love to have this piece and just display it in my home, although sadly i believe its already been snapped up by some lucky bidder. Oh well...

Also in SHOWstudio in the run up to Christmas has been Fred Butler, who has been decorating the studio's Christmas Tree. Butler has decorated/accesorised the tree using hand-made accessories, ranging from hair slides, brooches & bracelets, in varying textures and colours. I love the kind of cellophane-esque texture of them, they remind me of opening a tin of Quality Street.

P.S Whilst blogging earlier this month about designer Christmas Trees, for some ridiculous reason, I neglected to include Gareth Pugh's 2008 tree for Topshop. So...here it is;

In true Gareth Pugh style the tree tree comprises simply of 60 neon tubes attached to a free standing metal frame. Definitely on my Christmas list.

Jonathan Adler Christmas Poodle

As demonstrated by John Galliano and others (see earlier post), Christmas Trees don't necessarily have to mean stereotypical glitter baubles and santas/snowmen/reindeer. Not that there's anything wrong with the traditional christmas characters, but sometimes its nice to be a bit non-traditional and throw in some surprise elements. Potter/interior design genius Jonathan Adler, has a delightful range of white ceramic tree ornaments such as the Poodle (above) and elephant (below) which add a nice element of his 'happy chic' style to the tree.

Aldo Swarovski Neon necklace

Aldo has teamed up with Swarovski to create some interesting contemporary takes on costume jewelry. Whilst some pieces are a bit bland and predictable, this can definitely not be said for the 'Huzzard' necklace above. This piece is a traditional crystal bib necklace, entwined and tangled in neon cord, which adds a coulourful, punk-ish twist. With 528 crystals, the necklace is not short on the 'bling' factor, and is sure to bring some festive sparkle to any outfit.

John Galliano for Claridges, and other designer christmas trees

Being a huge fan of Christmas, nothing gets me going more than the sight of the good ol' Christmas tree. Shame then, that I'm not in London today for the big unveiling of the John Galliano christmas tree at Claridges. Naturally, the tree is not your run-of-the-mill tinsel and shiny bauble extravaganza, but more of an icy blue and white frozen tropical tree (see above photos and initial design sketch below). Erected overnight, the 20ft tree is constructed out of papier mache, polystyrene and paper, and featured amongst the branches are a handmade leopard, some parrots and a dragonfly.
Like my own (not nearly as impressive ) christmas tree, it will be on display until the twelfth night (January 6th).

Other designer christmas trees will be on display in Paris from December 8th-14th at

'cite de l'architechture' as part of the city's annual 'Les Sapins de Noel des Createur' event. Designers ranging from Paul Smith, Hermes, Gaultier, and Louis Vuitton (to name but a few) will be designing one-off trees which will be auctioned off to raise money for the charity 'Sol en Si' (Solidarite en SIDA) which helps young people affected by AIDS. Last year, 44 stunning creations raised a total of 101,000 Euros for the charity, so hopefully this year will also bring much festive cheer and charitable proceeds. Just because its December 1st, here's a few shots from last year's trees to kick start the Christmas Spirit.

Who wouldn't say no to a pair of these gorgeous limited edition Verdura cuffs. A replica of those frequently worn by the eternally fabulous Coco Chanel, after she was presented them by the Duke of Verdura, the cuffs are decorated with a bejeweled version of the Maltese Cross, and would look great on my wrists. Shame however, as the price is 'on application', so I guess I'll be making do with my lucite cuffs from Target.

Discarded Vintage Library Books

Whilst attending night school at a junior high school in the US one evening for a Japanese Class, I saw a cart buried in books with a sign on it that read " Old library books, FREE, help yourself! ". So, I had a rummage around during a break from my class and found these two gems.

The first, entitled "The Concise History of Fashion and Costume", was published in 1969 and has some amazing sketches, illustrations and photos.There are loads that i love, but here are my favorites;

Interestingly, after this sketch, there was an article about the 'new' see through clothes, and how these would 'for obvious reasons' not become popular.

If only the author could fast forward to today.

The book is a small-ish hardback book, and has this very sixties print on the front and back. Best of all though, it has its library index tags on the spine, and still has its 'due date' stamps inside the cover.

My second free find of the evening, was entitled "Heavens to Betsy!" and has nothing to do with fashion at all. It basically contains everyday expressions and phrases, and attempts to explain their origins.The author is a bit wishy-washy when trying to pin down the origins of some of the phrases, however I love the randomness of it , as well as the illustrations (by Tom Funk - what a great name) on page 144 of a 'Bear with a sore head', and on page 89 of 'Putting on the dog'.

The December issue of British Vogue had a great article which listed '30 Ultimate Fashion Adventures'. Number 18 on the list was ;

"Wear head to toe Gareth Pugh when meeting your boyfriend's parents"

Already having a man of long term standing, I don't expect to be having any 'first-time-meeting-the-parents encounters.' However, if I had the opportunity, the above look from his Spring 2007 collection, would easily be my look of choice for its sheer impracticality and beauty. Not to mention, I wouldn't have to worry about hair or makeup.

I remember GP creating some amazing pieces during his stint on the reality show 'The Fashion House' which was aired in the UK years ago, just after he graduated. He has talked about this phase of his life being on the show as 'horrible', and the only alternative to being on the dole. I however can picture all the wonderful things he created, including a Breton stripe body suit (covering the head and face also) attached to some sort of cube (i think), and a big black PVC suit with a chesterfield sofa-like giant hump/bulge on the back. Sadly however, I couldn't find any pictures out there on the web.

Anyway, I digress.(Sorry, any excuse to talk Gareth Pugh again..) Other notable fashion adventures listed in the article included;

"Gallop away in a Balenciaga riding hat" (number 26)

"Climb the fire escape of a 30 storey Manhattan hotel in a Gucci minidress and heels" (number 1)

Suddenly, the life list I made last year (containing the usual stereotypical goals - run a marathon, see the Great Wall of China etc, etc...) all seems rather dull in comparison. Time to dive into my wardrobe, slip into my glad rags, and go live some fashion adventures.

On My Feet Today #4

Having scoffed earlier at the newspaper article concerning flat shoes (see post earlier this month), well what do you know, I seem to have been nervously trying this trend lately. I found this pair of brogues whilst rummaging around in my old bedroom at my parents house. They are about 10 years old, but after a bit of polishing looked as good as new. I still haven't yet mastered a way of actually photographing the shoes whilst they are on my feet, but couldn't help photographing them in the fallen leaves in our garden, as I loved all the colours.

Louise Goldin for Topshop S/S 2010

Yes, more spiky things, and yes, more to the point, more spiky SHOES!!

Topshop unveiled a further collaboration with Louise Goldin for S/S 2010, which included these beauties, which are similar to those seen in her own S/S 2010 runway show. I love the studs and the mega-spikes, which remind me of the Louboutin for Rodarte shoes of Fall 2008.

I'm not sure if I can wait to get my hands/feet on these. I might have to try and DIY myself a pair, just to tide me over until the collection hits the shelves.

Gareth Pugh

Much as I am enjoying being in the USA right now, I wish I was back in London in order to watch the masterful Gareth Pugh in action at SHOWstudio. Gareth will be in residence at SHOWstudio starting at 11am tomorrow (also on Monday and Tuesday) creating a one off piece which will then be sold in the SHOWstudio shop on Bruton Place. For the lucky people in town, you can go along and watch him at the store, but for those of us not lucky enough to be there, we can watch the live streaming each day from 11am until 6pm GMT.

Whilst we are on the subject of Mr Pugh, I though it would give me an opportunity to obsess over his S/S 2010 collection all over again. My Favourite look has to be the dress above, and in particular the way it is styled with the headpiece. (By the way - check out Illustrator /blogger extraordinaire Fifi Lapin's Halloween entry, for her her bunny illustration of this look. - Love it). The collection as a whole was a lot more wearable than previous seasons, yet managed to retain the sense of originality and uniqueness for which we love him.

Crochet Parking Meter

Checking through the photos on my camera, I found this photo of a parking meter which I took a few weeks ago. The metal post section of it was covered in a crochet knit of different coloured stripes. I remember laughing at the randomness of it, yet also finding it rather adorable in a strange way. Hopefully someone will fabricate some sort of clothing for the other meters nearby, so they don't feel so naked.

This weekend I was hanging out in Denver, Colorado. Seeking shelter from the very (and i mean VERY)cold weather, I found myself in the Cherry Creek shopping mall. The mall itself, was the usual mix of upscale, high street stores, with a few Luxe retailers thrown in for good measure. Anyway, I stumbled upon a Samsonite store which was closing down and had everything greatly reduced. Here, I found this Matthew Williamson Signat case, which I had seen in several magazines ages ago when it was released back in 2006(I think) as part of one of the Samsonite Black Label designer collaborations.

The bag (which I love for its nerdy, geek-chic appearance) comes in a silver and pink strapped carry case, and includes a small makeup pouch. The true joy however, is when you open up the little briefcase itself, and see the very williamson-esque printed cloth interior, in all its technicolour glory. At a mere $50 (reduced from $360) I just couldn't help myself.

CFDA/Vogue Fashion Award 2009

A big congratulations to Womenswear designer Sophie Théallet who was named the winner of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in New York City on Monday night. As a result of winning this prestigious award, Theallet, whose clothes have been worn by Mrs Obama on several occasions over the past year, will be the lucky recipient of $200,000 as well as a year of mentoring.

Innovative jewelry designer Monique Péan was awarded runner-up, alongside menswear designer Patrik Ervell.

Out of these two, I have to say that I was most disappointed that Monique Pean did not get the 'big' award for her amazing Jewelry, which combines luxury materials with unexpected components. An example of this being the statement diamond necklace pictured below which features a necklace of champagne diamonds with a large piece of fossilized woolly mammoth ivory which is about 12,000+ years old. (Now that's what I call some serious vintage.)

In my dreams, I own a Birkin Bag. Probably a black one.

Being one of the most famous, and lusted-after handbags from luxury label Hermes, the Birkin Bag has been seen hanging from many a celebrity and fashionista arm, for what seems like decades. For those of us who sadly can't get our own Birkin, we can nonetheless enjoy in the beauty of this iconic accessory through these printed cocktail napkins made by Canadian based designer Avril Loreti available for purchase on Etsy.

The napkins, are available in sets of four or eight, and add a touch of chic to any cocktail soirees you may be hosting over the upcoming festive season. For those non-cocktail lovers, there are also Birkin Bag handkerchiefs available on the site, which should help provide cheer during any winter sniffles.

Off-Duty Kimono

Much as I would like to think of myself as appearing 'polished' at all times, sometimes my fashion centered day-wear clothes seem too binding and restrictive when just hanging out at the house, or relaxing at home in the couple of hours before a big night out. At times like these (or on days spent convalescing/ lazy mornings reading the papers/ weekend mornings nursing a hangover), I reach for this Kimono I purchased from a Japanese department store last year. The crazy blue and white print( see detail below) puts an instant smile to my face, and its so light, it can easily be crammed into overnight bags when heading off somewhere exciting for the weekend. Its the perfect alternative to the boring bathrobe, or worse still - the tracksuit.

Fashion Cookbook

Tonight I'll be eating Isaac Mizrahi's Mushroom Truffle spaghetti, or perhaps Yellowtail Crudo courtesy of Derek Lam. Sadly, no, I haven't found myself some new fash-pack friends, but I have been leafing through the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Fashion cookbook. The book contains several recipes ranging from no-fuss meals for lazy nights in, to more impressive dishes to impress friends/ loved ones. All recipes are contributed by famous American designers, so naturally these dishes are best served with a touch of fabulousness.

Thinking of Luella

Sad news, as you all probably know by now, about Luella- the fashion industry's latest victim of the recession. :-(. The label, which has one four designer of the year awards, including the British Fashion Council's designer of the Year award last November, is famed for its quirky take on traditional aspects of British society. Had a lot of walking to do today. Well, just to get some lunch at the fabulous Grove Cafe (home of the best chocolate cupcakes ever) so I pulled on some skinny jeans, a warm cashmere jumper, and went all biker chic with these boots from Topshop.

The Alexander McQueen shoes in his S/S 2010 collection created quite a controversy it would seem. I personally, found them original, thought-provoking, stunning and clever and have been longing for them since my fashion-greedy eyes fist saw them. Others it would appear had other ideas, slating them as 'ugly' 'grotesque' and 'ridiculous'. Shame on you, I say!

Thank heavens then for 'The Fake Karl' who when questioned upon the merits of these shoes in a segment for the Sunday Times Style Magazine, had this to say:

" The people who complain about these heels are the same people who complain about unrealistic things in movies. They always, without fail, wear flats - probably sandals with socks on."

Shoes going all comfy? Surely not?

(Backstage at Giles S/S 2010)

Being of average height I love my high heels, and have been loving the ever-increasing shoe hight trends of this season. Not only do they give me those highly-valued extra inches, but they can transform a basic outfit (think skinny jeans and a top) into something more put-together. Heels also have the ability to transform a persons' shape by both lengthening the body, and helping give a sort of 'butt-lift'.

Today, in the UK Sunday Times in an article entitled, 'The Revenge of The sensible Shoe', Author Gemma Soames highlighted the shoes of lower-elevation that were seen in September's S/S 2010 fashion shows by many of fashion's big-hitters(Marc Jacobs for LV, Marni, Giles to name but a few). Whilst this is all well and good, I for one do not relish the styling challenges that flats pose. For those without stick-thin, uber-long legs, how the hell are we to pull off kitten-heels, brogues, ballet flats and other pavement-hugging styles. I'll be trying to embrace these looks soon, but for the moment, i'll be running for comfort towards my platforms and stilettos.

On My Feet Today #2

(Well, actually on my feet last night , but never mind)
Gorgeous spike-studded heels from this season's Topshop Boutique collection. I Love the look of them, but sadly I haven't worn them that much, as for some reason I find the angle of the heel a little too steep to walk in. I guess I will just have to practice, as I love their edgy, punk-ish vibe, and they are a great alternative to all the high priced designer spiky shoes out there.

P.S. Talking of which. Here are the Givenchy shoes designed by Riccardo Tisci, no doubt the inspiration behind the Topshop version.

Also, these beauties by Christian Louboutin which are definitely on my ever expanding wish list.

Oversized Spike Ring

I seem to be having an accessories thing going on at the moment, as whilst looking at the Patricia Field website I was drawn to this large,spiky, in-your-face ring. I'm not a goth, but i do seem to find myself wearing a lot of black, and I can see this ring (along with some killer heels) being the perfect accessory to any LBD outfit I may have going on for cocktails/parties etc.

Go to Selfridges, and check out this beautiful crystal champagne flute, shaped like a shoe. Designed by none other than Christian Louboutin himself, in collaboration with Champagne producers Piper-Heidsieck, the glass pays homage to the 1880s ritual of drinking champagne from a lady's shoe. Yummy.

Scanning my ever-expanding shoe collection I found myself flashing back to last Fall's shoe purchases. Donning these Stella McCartney black patent platform wedges, I was reminded how amazingly comfortable they are. Besides, lets face it, everything looks much better when you are several inches taller.

Vintage Orchid Brooch

And so.. here I am in New Mexico. Albuquerque to be precise. Ahhh... the beautiful scenery of the Sandia Mountains towering over the desert.

Anyway, onto Central Avenue, in the Nob Hill District, where I stumbled upon a great vintage store 'Revolver', owned by a fellow Brit. The shop is crammed with racks and rails of women's and men's vintage clothing and accessories, and I found this beautiful orchid brooch in one of the many jewelry cabinets towards the front of the store. I happened to be wearing a nude/flesh pink coloured cardigan/shrug thingy from Reiss, and the two seemed to go together rather nicely.

Origami Tea Bags

Love, Love, LOVE these origami, bird-shaped tea bags designed by Russian designer Natalia Ponomareva. I Just wish I could actually get my hands on a package, as it appears for now, these little beauties are still in prototype stage.

P.S In the interim, I will just have to make do with Tea Forte's pyramid tea bags. Not quite as good but adds a touch more glamour than the usual tea-bag. Available at most posh food halls, and provided (as i have discovered) in good hotels. Otherwise click here for their website.

...Just so I could wear this mini military blazer (see below left) designed by Stella McCartney, as part of her new range for Baby Gap and Gap Kids. When I looked at the rest of Stella's Gap baby and kids collection, Literally, for like, half a nano-second I actually considered having children just as an excuse to buy these glorious pieces. Then I remembered all the reasons I don't like children (noise, smells, their ability to turn trans-atlantic flights into a nightmare, their inability to speak a proper language,etc etc), and sadly (unlike many other of my life decisions)fashion won't be ruling over this particular choice.

P.S The range is out in selected Gap stores now, so all you Yummy Mummies better get a move on before its going, going .....gone.

Urban Picnic Spots #1

Brown Hart Gardens, W1

Much as we all love London, we do often find ourselves needing to take a moment to chill the f. out. At times like these, particularly when I find myself caught up in the horrors of Oxford Street on the way to/from Selfridges, I make my way up the steep stone steps into the tranquil surroundings of Brown Hart Gardens. The perfect spot to just sit and nibble on a snack from any of the numerous surrounding eateries, or meet friends on a break from work. Relatively tourist - free, the gardens, comprise of a private, raised terrace, with large colourful flowerbeds, and seating on benches, and in little alcoves, carved into the stone. During the Summer months the Gardens host a series of free outdoor concerts - perfect coupled with a lover (or good friend, if you must) and a bottle of wine.

P.S. There's also a rather nice sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn entitled 'Volaire', which fits beautifully within the gardens.

Belated Summer Review

Being as i'm posting this in November, this isn't relevant as to what is going on in London right now. I don't care though, as even though its cold and dark outside now, i'm still obsessing over some exhibitions I had the pleasure of attending during the Summer. Top of my list, as it probably was for many others, was the Hayward Gallery 'Walking through my mind' exhibition, featuring works and installations from ten international artists, including; Charles Avery, Thomas Hirschorn, Yayoi Kusama, Bo Christian Larsson, Mark Manders, Yoshito Nara, Jason Rhoades, Pipilotti Rist, Chiaru Shiota, and Keith Tyson.
Who could help but raise a smile when walking onto the outside sculpture terrace of the gallery, which had been transformed into an astroturf field of bulbous red spotted mounds and skittle-shaped towers, courtesy of Yayoi Kusama's 'Guidepost To The New World'. Looking down from the terrace you could also see the polka-dot covered trees lining the banks of the Thames in her work 'Ascension of Polka Dots on the Trees'.

Moving on then, to the Serpentine Gallery, and both their stunning 2009 Summer Pavillion designed by SANAA architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa , and the Jeff Koons 'Popeye Series' exhibition.

The Summer Pavillion, a beautiful and elegant mass of shiny, reflective metal, meandered its way around spaces which included a cafe, general seating areas, and an enclosed area in which the Gallery's Park Nights series of talks took place. I know the whole point of the Pavillion, is the structure itself, but for me, it was all about the Chairs. Cute little, bunny-ears chairs in lemon yellow, bright pink, white, and natural wood colour. (Incidentally, if you can read Japanese, the chairs are on sale at online store Maruni.)

Chair obsession aside, into the gallery itself, and the "Oh wow!, it looks like inflated plastic, but WAIT...Its actually metal!!" genius of Jeff Koons.

The Popeye series, which was the first major series of Koons's work to be mounted in a public gallery in England, consisted of sculptures and paintings from 2002 onwards. Famous for casting inflatables, throughout his career from Lifeboat (1985) to Balloon Dog (1994-2000), Koons, in Popeye, turns his magic to inflatable childhood plastic toys and replicates them in painted aluminium.

But for the scary looking gallery staff, you REALLY wanted to reach out and touch them, just to check. Thank you Mr Koons for such a great exhibition. x
